A Nigerian policeman has been badly injured after being run over by a hit-and-run driver at Ilubinrin inward Simpson area of Lagos.
According to reports, the incident which happened on Thursday, January 5, 2023, has caused traffic congestion on the Third Mainland bridge.
Pictures of the policeman posted on its official Twitter handle by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) show the bruises on the right hand and face of the bloodied policeman.
The post reads, “[7: 30AM] #ThirdMainlandBridge #Accidentreport
“Report of a hit and run at Ilubinrin inward Simpson, this has led to a serious traffic backlog towards third mainland bridge.
“LASAMBUS has been informed for immediate intervention. More updates shortly.”
Reacting to the alleged attack, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, condemned the attack on the policeman regardless of the provocation.
Hundeyin who retweeted the LASTMA post said; “35 mins and just 7 retweets.
“Flip this, let it be a police van involved in hit and run and watch the retweets increase exponentially.
“Same way the many daily good deeds of the police are shunned, giving the false impression it’s all about negativity and mediocrity.”
However, Nigerians reacting to Hundeyin’s stance said what happened could be faced by anyone, adding that the spokesperson shouldn’t play the victim card.
Son of Consolation said; “Your point exactly? I’m even shocked to see this coming from an official handle. We both know that this officer doesn’t need RTs to get justice. He’s in the system & he knows exactly how to get justice. But for ordinary civilians who isn’t “connected” we resort to social media.”
Unapologetic Nigerian said; “There is nothing to flip SP Hundeyin, an unfortunate situation occurred and I quite condemn it. The job of the Nigerian Police is safety of the Nigerian lives and their properties, holding the NPF to a high standard shouldn’t pass as hate, my friend. Once again, nothing to flip!”
Omolola Gbenga Daniel said; “The worst part is that many Nigerians might not want to assist him with first Aid due to police brutality. I really feel sorry for the young officer.”
